  • Bemerkung
  • The model Songhuajiang 松花江 601 (Songhua River) was the first fully China made transistor radio. The protoype was finished on 28 Sep, 1958, but the first commercially released set was offered in 1960. This is the year, this radio has to get as introduction date for the market. The prototype did not have a model name and had a slightly different case of 130 x 80 x 36 mm. This here is the latest version of Songhuajiang 松花江 601. Earlier versions had other transistors.

In Summer 1958, the "Harbin Xinsheng Kaiguan Factory" 哈尔滨新生开关厂 (by the way: 开关 means switch / breaker), a manufacturer in Harbin, North East China, got the job to develop a modern pocket transistor radio with all the parts necessary for producing a full China designed and produced transistor radio. The production then was given to "Heilongjiang Semiconductor-Radio Factory", which has been renamed in 1970 to "Harbin No. 4 Radio Factory". Songhuajiang 松花江 601 won the first price in the China competition for good radios. There is also some followers like 601A etc.

    History:
This first attempt for a China built transistor radio was a Meiduo 美多 of unknown name as a prototype which was too large.
The second step was the Transistor Radio model Meiduo 美多 Transistor ST-2-1-1, which was produced in 1959; first series 300 units. The transistors and some parts still came from abroad. The year after model Songhuajiang 松花江 601 was released.

The model

Songhuajiang 松花江 601

is a very important transistor radio for China, since it is the first fully China made transistor radio from this country. The protoype was finished on 28 Sep, 1958, but the first commercially released set was offered in 1960.

In other words: There is at least one prototype - whithout the number 601 but already named Songhuajiang 松花江. "Harbin Xinsheng Kaiguan Factory" 哈尔滨新生开关厂, a manufacturer in Harbin, North East China, got the job to develop a modern pocket transistor radio with all the parts necessary for producing a full China designed and produced transistor radio. Therefore you find prototypes we know of under that name. By the way: 开关 means switch / breaker.

Since there were name changes of the production factory, first "Heilongjiang Semiconductor-Radio Factory", which has been renamed in 1970 to "Harbin No. 4 Radio Factory", you might find the different versions of the model Songhuajiang 松花江 601 at different factory names. We have not yet decided if we should use only one of the names and create a name with ".... - see Harbin No. 4 Radio Factory" or we split the production. Both way have their pro and contras.

Manual "02" names the manufacturer as Harbin Radio Factory - but we are quite sure that it is Heilongjiang/Harbin No.4 Radio Factory.

Essential is that the model Songhuajiang 松花江 601 received some changes and therefore we will try to document those changes by having different versons of the same model. We will try to get hold of the dates of the changes. We believe that 1963 was the last change and call this model therefore as version "latest". Later came improved models with other model names like Songhuajiang 松花江 601A and Songhuajiang 松花江 601B.

The technical description and at the same time the schematic is from a book on Chinese transistor radios, published in December 1965. It shows the transistors 3AG51, 3AG52, 3AG51, 3AG53 and two of 3AX30 for this last version.

We will be glad for any further notice on this model - which can also be made by guests by using the contact form. It may be in Chinese - then I would send it on to a Chinese radio friend.
