  • Recommended batteries: Ever Ready Portable 56 (a 144V battery for 135V HT and 10.5V Grid Bias) and an Exide CZG3 accumulator (2V Lead Acid LT) . The "0V" is to the +10.5V so that the "Portable 56" 0V/negative terminal is the grid Bias. Three wander plug leads.

    Push Pull audio output. The aerial connection is in series with a 465KHz IF "trap".

    External speaker and gram/PU connections.

    Same chassis isused in  487 Console and 486 Radiogram (different scale and additional lamp, windup/spring Garrard turntable), thus the Wavechange has a Gram position. The cabinet is nearly identical to 481U and 481AC models with the McMichael "lion" logo replacing the Magic Eye.

    Tone control switch with 3 positions.

    Scale Lamps /Bulbs are only on the 486 and 487 versions and are 2.5V 300mA and speaker grill pilot lamp 3.5V 150mA (probably only 486 model).

    Really a 1930s design, but over 1/5th of UK households no electricity in late 1940s and shortage of supplies of Minature Battery valves.

    R&TVS states an Exide CZG3, but it's not obvious where it goes when Portable 56 fitted. An Exide JSK2 Gel or other slimline pack fits easier unless the Portable 56 HT pack is vertical.
