The following is an edited version based on a description courtesy of Dennis Starks.
The AN/PRC-59 is a hand-carried portable VHF crystal-controlled single-channel FM transceiver based upon the commercial Motorola model Z23BAC1001AR by the US Treasury Department. These sets saw extensive service with the US Coast Guard. The radio is identical except for color, frequency split, and the use of a microphone voice handset to the US Navy's PRC-61. Circuit design includes a 100% solid state receiver and a hybrid (solid state and subminiature tubes) transmitter. Provisions exist for use of either a telephone-style handset or built in speaker.
The PRC-59 and 61 could be hand-carried with it's top mounted handle, shoulder carried with carry straps, or used as a back-pack set with carry straps or in a canvas bag. A canvas bag was provided to contain the RT unit and power supply for use as a portable station.
Operating frequency was 152-174 MHz on any one (two channels optional) crystal controlled frequency with RF power output of 1 watt. The set required 6v at 26mA for receive (provided by a Burgess F4P1 battery), 1.5v at 875ma (Using four "D" cells) and 67.5v and 130v at 55mA using two Burgess XX45 for the transmitter. Power could also be supplied via internal 6 volt nicads or any external 12vdc source using a solid state inverter. A 110vac power supply was also available.Accessories included a 1/4 wave whip antenna (2AD6021A), Handset (ZMN6003A), carry strap (ZLN6024A) and carry case (ZLN6025A).
