The only fault with my apparently dead 8X-910L turned out to be a fractured detector diode; it is located in a really vulnerable position on the edge of the PCB, probably touching the speaker frame. The good news is that it is really easy to find and change. I have added some detailed views of the PCB underside - the detector is very obvious with a white case & diode symbol. So not the dreaded germanium RF transistor whiskering I expected! And quite a relief not to have to intervene in such a crowded PCB.
