- Remarques
- This Monarch model "series 943-M" is a Tri-City design (ceramic (porcelan) tube holders). Later Steinite took over Tri-City (Tresco). The owner of the pictured set, Carl Cunert, wrote us the following: "under the Monarch Radio designation it has Series 943M and the model number portion of the label is blank." The tubes on the shown set (from Carl Cunert) are Volutron 199 (3 volts) but we believe the origianl tube line up was UV200 as audion and UV201A for the transformer coupled AF stage, which would mean it has a rheostat of about 8 to 10 ohms. The compression condenser is a typical Tresco-Steinite original. The condenser under the tube socket reads "Steinite calibrated condenser .001 Mfd". The other condenser reads all the same but it's value is .00025 Mfd. The terminal labels are the same as Steinite used. Because of this we searched for Steinite and fund the exact model Steinite 2-138. See "Radio Manufacturers of the 1920s by Alan Douglas, volume 3, page 136 for a picture. We don't know yet if this set from Carl Cunert has become the plate later or if Monarch sold Steinite radios under its own brand originally. It is quite possible that this model was made years before 1925 by Tri-City but was advertised by Steinite in 1925.

I received 3 pictures by contact form from a guest, Carl Cunert, Ohio, USA. They show a Monarch Radio Series 943-M, read from the plate. I then asked for some detail photos since I could not see the parts (in shadow) and fortunately Carl Cunert did send me 3 more pictures which show the plate, the inside underneath and the whole "chassis" from above.
Since I asked Konrad Birkner about some details, he was creating the model and I entered some text to the set (not model) shown. We then discussed the new pictures and came to the conclusion that we are not sure if the handle of the coil coupler is original. Also the compression condenser was discussed. Seeing the Steinite condensers, Conrad fetched the book from Alan Douglas - and found the Steinite model 2-138 to be the same (see volume 3, page 136).
Maybe Carl Cunert can send us more details like measurement, ohms of the rheostat and diameter of the tube sockets. But even better would be if Alan can contact the owners of the model Steinite 2-138 (Frank and Donna Whie) and see if they would be so kind to photgraph the set - perhaps also from inside - and measure the rheostat.
It is quite interesting to know more about this Monarch set ... Thanks for any help on that.
