  • The Philco model 38-643 series uses a 7-tube 4-band battery powered chassis with shadow meter (a type of signal strength meter used as a tuning aid). For the filament supply, a 2-volt storage battery may be used, or a dry battery (presumably 3 volts) with a type 1Z1 ballast lamp plugged into a socket on the battery pack. Philco service literature indicates that the schematic for the previous year's 37-643 chassis should be used when servicing the 38-643 chassis.

    There are two models in the series with different cabinet styles: Model 38-643B is a tombstone, and 38-643X is a console.
