- Anotaciones
- The Philco model 509X is a limited edition super deluxe high fidelity radio-phonograph using the same ten-tube two-band chassis as the 201X high fidelity radio. Only 500 units were built, and at a price of $600, were affordable only to the very rich.
Like the model 201X, the 509X covers the BC and SW (4.2-12 MHz) bands and has variable IF bandwidth to trade off selectivity versus fidelity, controlled by a three-gang potentiometer to adjust the Q of two of the three IF transformers and the gain of both IF stages. Unlike most radios of its day, which were restricted to about 4 kHz of audio bandwidth, the 509X, like the 201X, has 7.5 kHz of bandwidth at its maximum fidelity setting. The circuit includes a 10 kHz audio filter to remove the high pitched heterodyne that could be caused by the carrier of an adjacent channel. In addition to the fidelity-selectivity control, which functions somewhat like a treble control, there is a bass compensation switch. The chassis has a shadow meter (tuning aid) with its own dedicated control tube (unlike other Philco designs where the shadow meter simply indicates B+ current to the RF and/or IF stages). The push-pull output stage, with one 42 driver tube and two 42 output tubes, delivers 15 watts of undistorted output.
