  • The 'Pye plug' coaxial connector (UK Air Ministry stores Ref. No. 10H/3911) was developed by Donald Jackson and George Baguley in 1939, primarily for the interconnection of military airborne radar and navigation equipment. It is a female right-angle elbow type with a range of different-sized cable entry clamps. The inner conductor of the cable is retained by a 6BA grub screw that passes through the centre contact. The connector was subsequently used in a wide range of British RF equipment during the war and up till about 1969. The connector was also used commercially by Pye Telecom on all of the radio-telephone equipment from 1946 until the end of the Ranger series of mobiles and base stations in 1964.

The companion male chassis connector is Ref. No. 10H/528. The retaining clip, which engages a slot in the shell of the plug, holds it securely but allows it to be removed or inserted more quickly than for a screw fitting design. Alternatively, as in the Type 78A Rebecca antenna switch, the plugs could be secured by clamps to compatible sockets that were integrated into the coaxial device itself. Straight connectors, a T-piece and back-to-back connectors were also produced.

The Pye plug can be readily adapted to receive a Belling & Lee coax plug.
