  • Remarques
  • The Radio Craftsmen model 500A (number plate only 500 !) is an AC operated audio amplifier for custom installations with one (mono) input (470 k). For optimum operation, the output tubes KT66 should be a matched pair. The line transformer has 3 positions for line voltage.

Model 500 is the first model of this line which includes 500, 500A, C550 and C550A. Other names like C500, RC500, C500A, RC500A or RC550A are wrong - but we have to list or name them since so many persons look up under these wrong names. SAMS Photofact is distinguishing between model 500 and model 500A - but Radio Craftsmen made on both a number plate with only "500" as model name. Distinctive is the parts line-up on the plate. Therefore have a closed look to our SAMS reference picture when deciding which model it is.

An article tells us: "In late 1953, Craftsmen indroduced the C500A, an upgraded model of the original C500. Generally, the circuit is similar with the same tube complement except for the 5U4G rectifier that replaced the origianl 5V4G. Plate voltage is upped another 10 volts and the 4 microfarad oil cap is eliminated. The dual 40 microfarad 500V-can-type filder cap is relocated under the chassis. A larbger 25 Hy filter choke was added to the top of the chassis. Damping factor was increased to 32 and output power rating was increased to 15-watts RMS. The output transformers used were mainly the rounded-edge Stancor types with the same specifications and ratings as the C500 amplifier. The power transformer was changed to a beefier one that is the equivalent of a Stancor PC8414 with 1128 V center tap at 150 mA rating. Specifications fo the C500A are 10.1 db from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with total harmonic distortion of less than 0.1 % at 10 watts."
