  • The Victrola Automatic Orthophonic VE10-50X is the first successful fully automatic record changer. See here on YouTube in action. The coin operated jukebox plays up to 12 records automatically without the need to manually intervene. About 12,000 VE 10-50's were produced until production was discontinued in late 1927 but the catalog showed it until early 1928. It is basically an acoustical phonograph with components identical to the top-of-the-line Credenza combined with the latest Victor changer mechanism. The instruments were available in both mahogany and walnut finishes. The X version uses an AC moter and the U version could play on an AC or DC power line, but less than 700 VE 10-50 U were sold. The price of $ 600 was about that of a good car. In the same year the model 10-70 was introduced - the same system but instead of acoustical it has a tube amplifier - and did cost 1100 $!
