"The remarkable new C65-0 woofer is the first loudspeaker produced in Australia featuring a pneumatic neoprene rim suspension. This high compliance suspension combined with a large 4" diameter spider of open weave fabric provides a nominal cone resonance of 30 Hz - lower than any standard speaker of any size manufactured in Australia. When operated in the enclosure extreme air loading forces the resonance of the C65-0 up to 80 Hz, however the speaker still radiates strongly down to 35 Hz - an impossible performance in past years except for enclosures of up to ten times the internal volume of Mini-fi. The resilience of the trapped air in the enclosure provides the main stabilizing force on the cone. By taking advantage of this naturally linear force and the substantially linear neoprene rim compliance the waveform of the C65-0 at low frequencies is superior to conventional speakers. To ensure deflection linearity the magnetic gap and the voice coil length are optimum for the permissible cone excursion limits. The design allows a total mechanical excursion of ¾" for low frequency radiation - an excursion greater than most 12" speakers. Under extreme excursions the neoprene rim inflates with the pressure build up within the enclosure. Special features are the long-life spiral voice coil braid used for extreme excursion conditions and the resin bonding of the copper voice coil to the stable aluminium former. The superior definition and high efficiency of the Mini-fi system is directly attributable to the woofer's 12,000 Gauss ferrite magnet. This 14 oz. magnet is the largest of its type used on an Australian-made loudspeaker. Cross-over networks used in many multi-speaker systems provide a treble roll-off in the bass speaker of between 3 and 8 dB per octave at the cross-over point. A natural roll-off slope of 20 dB per octave has been achieved in the C65-0 by engineering a sharp mechanical cut-off with suitable cone design. Space and cost savings are made and the phase shift of reactive networks is avoided."
