- Anotaciones
- The manufacturer of the mentioned models is Colonial (see Stein). Rider's schematic Sears 14-4 from June 23, 1937 is for the battery radio chassis 101.472 and the following models: 4608-9 (cabinet ?), 4628-9 (table "horizontal"), 4638-9 (table "vertical"), 4648-9 (console), 4728 and 4748. Rider's 14-5 shows the alignement procedures for this chassis 101.472 (incl. socket, trimmers and tube line up) and the chassis 101.472X for the models 4608-9A, 4628-9A, 4638-9A, 4648-9A, 4728A and 4748A.
This has not to be confused with the actual models which have either an 8 or a 9 as last digit, depending on the power source: "...8" is the model using "A" dry batteries 4.5 volt and "...9" using 4 volt storage battery. Examples: 4608 is the dry cell and 4609 the same model for storage battery, a model 4608-9 is not existing! The "B" battery is always two 45 volt batteries and there is a separate 3 volt battery (two cells) for the dial lights.
The differences between the two chassis (with or without "X") are explained in Rider's 14-6 from July 6, 1938: "Later production of chassis 101.472 is 101.472X. The revision consists of the two 1J6G output tubes being replaced by a 1H4G driver tube and a 4A6G (2 x 2-V-heater possible) output tube. These changes reduce the "A" battery drain from .5 amperes to .3 amperes, and reduce the "B" drain from 23 ma. to 15 ma.
The Sears catalog 1937 features the models with "57 FM" in front of the model number (Stein, page 127, 133) and the catalog 1938 with "57 HM" (Stein, page 141). This model 4648 is in 1938 actually model 4648A and sells now for $ 39.95. The Sears catalog does not show the "A".
