With 1 AM and 6 SW bands, Haiou (Seagull) 715 16-transistor portable radio receiver is a premium product developed for consumer market in early 1980s. It is a superheterodyne receiver with two IF conversions (for SW only), 1st at 13.5 MHz and 2nd at 465 kHz, and one un-tunable RF stage. These features enable high sensitivity, small fading and strong image rejection, making it an ideal choice for those in remote areas.
It also features a unique tone controller consisted of two switches instead of a potentiometer. By using the four combinations of the on and off states of these switches, tone can be customized for specific listening experience.
In addition, it uses a BJT differential pair to enable balanced mixer, which is also rarely seen in consumer radio receivers.
This model has at least two variants, one using Si PNP transistor at RF stage while the other using Si NPN transistor at RF stage.
