  • Sony Multi-Media Data Discman DD-8 Electronic Book Player

This was the first Electronic Book produced by Sony.

This player uses the system developed for the Sony Discman D-88, the smallest CD player introduced in 1988.

    - Uses Mini-CDs of 80 mm of diameter pre-recorded with multimedia information.
    - User can navigate in the menus using special buttons.
    - User can search words, keywords, menu search and graphic search

Sony DD-8 has a black and white LCD display with the resolution of 256 x 200 pixel

Further models like the DD-1EX and DD-10EX both made use of a flip or clamshell form and have greeter resolution ¼ VGA.

The DD-8 has outputs for audio and video.  For stereo headphones and video in formats NTSC or PAL/SECAM chosen by a switch

The original flat, rectangular design of the DD-8 was closer to later e-book readers such as the Amazon Kindle.

The original DD-8 comes with 8 data Mini-CDs covering several applications like: “The wellness Encyclopaedia” , “Passports World Travel Translator", etc. All the data was created by Sony Electronic Book Authoring System (SEBAS).

The discs were produced with the collaboration of Sony Electronic Publishing Company.
