This 83 chassis has no Viso-Glo tuning indicator. Consequently it does not need a "regulator". The place for such a device: see chassis back where an unused hole is at the left half. The same chassis is used for the version with the VisoGlo indicator VG-1 (see pictures) where said place holds a potentiometer shaft.
Whether the cabinet shown here is particular for this version without Viso-Glo is not yet known. This Sparton model receives the following bands: Broadcast 550 - 1500 kHz and the SW bands 1.4 - 3.4 MHz, 3.3 - 8 MHz and 7.5 - 19 MHz.
There are also two versions: The other one with a tube 78 as first detector, described and photographed in the Sparton dealers brochure - and the model with the 6A7 as first detector, according to Rider's Sparton 5-15ff and sets we have found - see photos in the link. We don't know if both were produced. See the article about the two versions and the article here about season 1934/35.

Sparton 83 is a model with an option for a tuning indicator. The chassis are similar, only the Viso-Glow and its regulator (sensitivity setting) are missing in the simpler version.
Whether the different cabinets were particularly allocated to the chassis versions is not yet known. Currently we know that the modern / art deco type employs the Viso-Glo. And the one without Viso-Glo is slightly more cambered. It looks like a model 80, but the panel arrangement and the tube lineup are different.
The cabinets of 83 and 80 are similar (but only the cabinets!).
Both chassis are clearly marked 83.
