During WWII the Trav-Ler Karenola Radio & Telv. Corp. produced components for military application like this switch, SW-141-V.
This switch was used in at least two applications:
- Push-to-talk switch in aircraft and tank intercom systems.
- Tonality switch for Western Electric headset model 528 in combination with Western Electric Condensor 161A (0.15µF).
In released position of the switch handle, the condensor was put in series with the 528 hearing capsule, forming a high-pass filter network. This shifted the maximum of the response curve of the hearing capsule to higher audio frequencies, thus improving the understandability in high noise level environments.
When pressing the handle, the condensor was bridged, broadening the frequency response of the hearing capsule. A small catch served to retain the handle in pressed position, giving relief to the operator's thumb during extended broad band operation.
A leather strap served to hang the switch around the soldier's neck.
