  • RTL-SDR is a Software Defined Radio USB dongle that is attached via USB connector to a PC and is controlled by software to become an operational radio receiver. RTL-SDR has a SMA coax antenna connector and is powered by USB.

    While the RTL-SDR hardware defines frequency coverage, the PC software defines what types of radio modulation and encoding can be received.

    The minimum configuration for FM, AM and SSB reception is one RTL-SDR dongle, one PC, and the AirSpy SDR# control software. This software allows AM/SSB bandwidth and filter characteristics to be simply typed in; no crystals, filters, etc.

    Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) stereo transmissions over shortwave (USB, 10 kHz bandwidth) can be received and decoded with the Dream 2.1.1 software. Other types of reception can be added with other software, eg. RX-SSTV for Slow Scan TV reception.

    RTL-SDR's tuner covers 24 - 1500 MHz. Version 3 introduces direct sampling mode, allowing software-controlled coverage from 0.5 - 28.8 MHz with mirroring between the 0.5 - 14.4 MHz and 14.4 - 28.8 MHz bands.
