  • Anotaciones
  • The Webster model 725-1 record changer was one of the earliest 3-speed (33, 45, and 78 RPM) record changers and was used in the Magnavox 264K radio/TV/phono combo (and probably other phonographs from that time). It is generally similar to the Webster model 356, and the service information on the 356 found in Sams set 106 folder 16 is useful for servicing the model 725-1.

The tone arm has a pickup cartridge with dual stylus assembly (for "standard" 78 RPM records and "LP" 45 and 33 RPM records). Unlike the more common "turnover" cartridges, selection between the two styli is accomplished by tilting the cartridge forward and backward. This type of pickup cartridge was called "Pianissimo" when used by Magnavox. A lever on the tone arm near its pivot is used to tilt the cartridge and select the proper stylus.

The center spindle is a passive type, although it raises and lowers slightly to sense the presence or absence of records waiting in the stack by weight. A pusher (with positions selectable for either 10 inch or 12 inch records) is used to drop each record. Although the tone arm is placed on its rest after the last record, the turntable does not have automatic shutoff. The turntable motor is turned on and off manually using the speed selection lever. Manual and Automatic operation can be selected by a knob concentric with the Reject button.

This record changer does not handle stacks of mixed records -- the stack must be all of one size. For 7 inch records, a special adaptor is used on the pusher mechanism (which must be set in the 10 inch position). In addition, a lever on the tone arm rest must by rotated toward the spindle to set the proper touchdown point for 7 inch records. A center adaptor must be used on each 7 inch record as well.
