This device has connections for a Galvanometer and a Battery so it appears to be a Wheatstone bridge. Probably used to measure an unknown electrical resistance by balancing two legs of a bridge circuit, one leg of which includes the unknown component, in the case of this unit the unknown resistance would be connected between the 2 terminals marked X
