Although the term "Phonograph", invented by Thomas Edison, literally means "write sound" (from the greek words: phonè = sound and grapho = write), the term was still used in the early 20th century by the general public without distinction between recording or reproducing machines nor between cylinder and disc machines. 

Edison also called his invention a "talking machine" to distinguish it from the previous invented Phonautograph (Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville) that could only record sound and not reproduce it.
