The Currawong amplifier is a stereo audio amplifier based on a design by Grant Wills in 2003 incorporating cheap, readily available 100V audio line transformers with the line impedance taps used in the class-AB ultra-linear output stage.
The Silicon Chip design used two 12AX7’s as pre-amp and phase splitter with two 6L6 beam power Triodes as the push-pull output stage, per channel. It also incorporated a delayed B+ soft start circuit.
It was described in Silicon Chip in November, December 2014 and January 2015.
It sold on kit form, without a case from Altronics Pty. Ltd. for around $700.
The Editor of Silicon Chip, Nicholas Vinen explains that the Currawong name recognises the very musical call of the bird.
A Pied Currawong is an Australian native bird about the size of a Crow or Raven and is mostly all black except for the telling white wing & tail feathers. Known for its melodious calls, the species' name currawong is believed to be of indigenous origin.
Output power: 2 x 10W (8Ω, 6Ω), 2 x 9W (4Ω) Operating mode: Class-A (8Ω), Class-A/AB (6Ω, 4Ω) Input sensitivity: 1V RMS (8Ω, with feedback enabled)
Signal-to-noise ratio: 77dB Channel separation: >60dB, 20Hz-20kHz (4Ω, 6Ω & 8Ω) Harmonic distortion: typically, <0.1%, 6Ω & 8Ω
Frequency response: ±0.6dB, 30Hz-20kHz Damping factor: >20 (8Ω), >10 (4Ω) Mains power draw: typically, 120-130W
