3 cm Electromagnetic Wave Apparatus.
Comprises;
- Klystron power supply & an oscillator (042.871)
- 3 cm microwave Klystron transmitter and antenna (044.571)
- 3 cm microwave receiver and antenna 9 (045.673).
This set was commonly used by students of the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences to conduct experiments to test for polarisation, rotation of the plane of polarisation, optical activity analogue, diffraction, and interference at microwave frequencies.
The power supply unit 042.871 provides the heating voltage required to operate the reflex klystronas well as the resonator voltage and reflector voltage.
The modulation can be switched between off, 100Hz, and 1kHz via a rotary switch.
The 100 Hz is taken from the full-wave rectifier by switching off the smoothing of the reflector voltage.
The 1 kHz are generated via an internal resonant circuit fed back to a system of the ECC82, which is inductively coupled to the reflector voltage.
The second system of the ECC82 remains unused.
It is possible to couple an external modulation signal into the reflector circuit, in the normal state this is closed by a short-circuit plug.
The Transmitter 044.571 incorporates the reflex Klystron which is adjusted to produce a wavelength of 3.2 cm (10 GHz) at approximately 25 mW.
The Receiver 045.673 incorporates a silicon microwave diode mounted in a resonant cavity across the waveguide and the rectified signal is indicated directly on the inbuilt 100 uA meter.
